Average Book Value Formula

where is preferred stock located on a balance sheet or income statement?
I am trying to calculate the Book value per share for a company and connot locate the preferred stock to complete the formula
Book value per share = (stockholder's equity - preferred stock)/average shares outstanding
these days, based on the accounting rules, it's not uncommon to see preferred stock to be reported after long term liabilities and before shareholder's equity. this is because perferred stock can sometimes be considered to be quasi-debt (doesn't have all the characteristics of traditional debt but doesn't have all the characteristics of common shares reported as equity).
